On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 26, in the 23rd auditorium of the College of Exact Sciencies and Technologies (FCEyT), was organized the conference: “Jesuit Missions, the Contributions of Andresito Artigas Guacurari,” under the leadership of Dr. Alfredo Poenitz, a professional with a distinguished curriculum, a researcher of CONICET and currently a member of the Board of Directors of CONEAU.

The event had a great level of participation from the academic community; and other educational institutions were invited, especially professors and students of the Superior Institute of Professors including Prof. Rodolfo Argentino Diaz. At the same time, the event was attended by the Former Chancellor of UNSE, Ing. Arnando Tenchini, Professors Guillermo San Marco, Secretary of Extension Affairs, Public Relations and Transference Maria Teresita Pilan and the Dean of our College Ing. Hector Paz, who introduced the renowned keynote speaker.

In his introductory speech Dean Hector Paz emphasized: “we as the College of Exact Sciences and Technologies, are organizing a conference of these characteristics, it seems that we had no relation with History, Culture or with all that is related to mankind; but it is not the case. Our College has always maintained a mission to introduce topics that have related with men and his future projections. We believe that it is pertinent for our College, to reflect about this topic, and generate spaces of debate about our culture and history. Today, we are honored to be joined by this distinguished keynote speaker, a great public leader at the national level and a man from the interior provinces of Argentina, a distinguished researcher of topics that deal with our national history and culture, and from there he has a vision of what is represented in our country.”

Professor Poenitz, is Professor of History and Latin, graduated from the Federal Institute of Education (Entre Rios); he was a Fulbright Scholar in the United States, where he obtained the degree of Master of Arts – University of Texas (Austin, United States); also he obtained a Doctorate Degree in Social Anthropology, by the National University of Misiones, moreover he is specialized in the regional history of Misiones and is a professor of the College of Arts in the National University of Misiones.

His research about Andresito Artigas has to do with the revelation of such a mythical and controversial personality of the Misiones region, who has been admired by some and underestimated by others. According to Prof. Poenitz: the historic region in which was born Andresito had its origins in the Jesuit Province that was developed between 1609 and 1768, and at its apex it comprised 30 different communities located within the rivers of Parana and Uruguay, in the current territory of the following nations: Argentina (Misiones and Corrientes), Paraguay and Brazil (state of Rio Grande do Sul). After the expulsion of the Jesuits, the Guarani indigenous groups were abruptly incorporated to the colonial world and the latter implemented a general decadence of these people. The appearance of Andresito after May Revolution mobilized the Guaraní rebellious fighters in their war against the Empire of Brazil and Paraguay. The result of this offensive was the total destruction of the Pre-Colombian Nations and caused the general scattering of their population.
